Pourable Gel Fuel Recall

On June 22, 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a statement regarding the pourable gel fuel recall of Napa Home and Garden‘s NAPAfire and FIREGEL, due to risk of fire and burn hazards.  The recall notes that it was done in cooperation with Napa Home and Garden; however, it does not address similar products made by BirdBrain, Inc.

The CPSC statement notes that NAPAfire and FIREGEL are used with a Napa Home and Garden firepot.  It may be difficult to tell when the firepot has run out of fuel, and refilling it with pourable gel fuel while still lit may result in the exploding firepot and posing a serious risk to consumers.  At the time of the recall, the CPSC had already received eight reports of injuries caused by fuel gel firepots, in addition to the 23 burns Napa Home and Garden reported to the CPSC.

Georgia-based Napa Home and Garden issued a precautionary hold on sales of its gel burners and gel fuel in response to reports of injuries, and is offering full refunds to anyone that purchased the gel fueled firepots; however, nearly half a million units of NAPAfire and FIREGEL have already been sold, resulting in at least 23 reported injuries and at least one exploding firepot lawsuit filed in federal court in South Carolina before the pourable gel fuel recall.

Anyone still in possession of NAPAfire or FIREGEL should immediately stop using the fuel gel and firepots and seek a refund from the retailer where they were purchased.  If you have suffered a pourable gel fuel recall injury, you should contact an exploding firepot lawyer at Chaffin Luhana today.

Additional Fuel Gel Recalls

On September 1, 2011, the CPSC issued a press release regarding a recall on the pourable gel fuel manufactured by the following nine manufacturers:

  • Bird Brain Inc.;
  • Bond Manufacturing;
  • Sunjel Company;
  • Fuel Barons Inc.;
  • Lamplight Farms Inc.;
  • Pacific Decor Ltd.;
  • Real Flame; and
  • Smart Solar Inc.

Additionally on October 11, 2011 the Marshall Group recalled Marshall Gardens Patioglo Bio-fuel Gel, and Fireside Gel Fuel Bottles — manufactured by 2 Burn Inc. and distributed by Evergreen Enterprises — were recalled on October 25, 0211.

Anyone still in possession of a Bird Brain or PatioGlo firepot, or firepot manufactured by any of the above manufacturers should immediately stop using the fuel gel and firepots and seek a refund from the retailer where they were purchased.
