BirdBrain Firepot Gel Fuel Recall Lawyer

BirdBrain Firepots

BirdBrain Inc., a manufacturer of ceramic firepots, has come under scrutiny since its product began harming consumers. The Bird Brain firepot, a wickless outdoor torch, uses a jelly-like fuel that has been causing second and third-degree burns when the product explodes.

The firepot has two main parts: a ceramic pot and a stainless steel cup that sits in the center of the pot. BirdBrain sells a gel fuel as well, which is poured into the stainless steel cup and ignited. When a consumer adds additional gel fuel to the BirdBrain firepot after it has been ignited, the firepot can explode in a manner similar to a Molotov cocktail, and may cause injury to any individual nearby.

BirdBrain Firepot Recall

BirdBrain, Inc., located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, has manufactured a firepot that has caused small explosions leading to burn injuries. On September 1, 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) annouced a recall of BirdBrain gel fuel. On October 5, 2011, the CPSC issued a press release to provide consumers with safety information pertaining to Bird Brain’s Gel Fuel recalls of the BirdBrain Firepot Fuel Gel, Bird Brain Firepot Citronella Fuel Gel and Bird Brain BioFuel Fuel Gel products due to the flash fire hazards and resulting burn injuries.  BirdBrain has recalled approximately 1.6 million bottles and cans of the pourable gel fuel, as part of the larger fuel gel recall of 2 million bottles of fuel gels announced on September 1, 2011, by various manufacturers, including Bird Brain, Bond Manufacturing, Sunjel Co., Fuel Barons Inc., Lamplight Farms Inc., Luminosities Inc., Pacific Décor Ltd., Real Flame, and Smart Solar Inc.  To spread the word about this recall, Consumer Reports has most recently reported on the Bird Brain gel fuel products recalled, specifically listing the Bird Brain Fuel Gel products affected by this recall.

On June 22nd, the CPSC announced a voluntary recall on a similar product – Napa Home & Garden’s Pourable NAPAfire and FIREGEL Gel Fuel bottles and jugs. The voluntary recall came after the CPSC received at least eight reports of explosions or burns caused by the firepots or gel fuel, in addition to the 23 reports that Napa Home and Garden had made the CPSC aware of.

BirdBrain has established a process for returning recalled fuel gel. However, it is recommended that people who have been injured by BirdBrain fuel gel keep the fuel gel as evidence.
